August 2003
Dear Supporters of Secondary Education:

Once again, the school season has begun. We are truly blessed to be able to begin our first year as a four-year high school. In this our third year we have grown from fifteen students to forty-four.

This year we have added another teacher to our staff. We are glad to welcome Miss Caroline Huizenga. Miss Huizenga comes to us from Redlands, California where she taught at Hope PRCS for 5 ½ years. She will be teaching Spanish, General Science, and Human Anatomy & Physiology. Everyone make sure you welcome Miss Huizenga as she takes up her life here with us teaching at Heritage.

Our teaching staff has been busy this summer preparing courses for this school year. They have been developing curriculum in the areas of Spanish, General Science, Human Anatomy and Accounting to name a few things. Three members of the staff attended the Biblical Psychology course taught by Prof. Hanko this past June, and Mrs. Sue Looyenga continued to work on her Masters Degree at Dordt College.

Our parent teacher handbook was updated this summer. A special item of interest is the new off campus policy for the upper classmen. Some of our seniors will be participating in a work release program. Parents and participating students should be sure to look over this new part of the policy and make sure they understand it. Work has also begun on a career planning handbook, we hope to see it developed into a valuable tool for our students to use.

The Technology Committee continues to work with the Education Committee. They have purchased two additional laptops, as well as one more portable computer workstation for the main floor classrooms.
The board has approved the concept of an annual Junior/Senior Banquet, to be sponsored by our juniors for this coming year. The board also has set dates for the following:

  • Convocation Exercise, to be held on Friday, August 22 at 7:30p.m. Rev. Allen Brummel’s message will be “Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth.”
  • Annual Fundraising Dinner, to be held on Friday, October 10, with Rev. Wilbur Bruinsma as our guest speaker. (More information to follow).
  • HCHS’s first graduation ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at 4:00 p.m.

Our Building Committee has been very busy this summer. They have made arrangements with Calvary to assure that we will have enough room to hold all our classes. Although they have given us additional rooms in the basement that will be used as a classroom, chapel and cafeteria, we will still be cramped. Also, our great room on the main level this year will be divided into two classrooms each holding up to 27 students. The classrooms will be separated by folding dividers, which are not sound proof barriers. Our classrooms are going to be crowded; we actually can not fit the entire freshmen class into our computer lab. We see the need for our own building. The money for our building fund continues to come in, but slowly. It is our responsibility to see that our children receive a proper Reformed education, and that it is done in a facility that can adequately hold them. While the supporters of Heritage have been generous and we thank all those who have given, we felt it necessary to call this need to your attention. The 2003-2004 proposed budget has been estimated, with $43,000.00 to be raised at our Annual Fund Raising Dinner and $90,745.00 to be received through collections, envelopes and dues. Please consider these needs as you give. We covet your prayers for the students, teachers, parents and the board in each of their duties.

The Board would like to recognize several individuals who are beginning their third year of volunteering at Heritage.

We would like to thank Kate Van Uffelen our basketball coach and Stephanie Zylstra and Monica Lindsey our volleyball coaches, for not only coaching our teams but also for being great mentors and showing enthusiasm in teaching our girls how to play the game with the right attitude and respect for each other as individuals. We would also like to thank Kristin Prim for volunteering as our assistant basketball coach last year.

Stephan De Jong and Matt Bennett have spent many hours at Heritage, putting in our computer lab and keeping our network updated. They have always been available to the staff at anytime of day to solve technical issues.

Val Terpstra is our school nurse and keeps all of our health records in order.

Don Terpstra will once again be taking time out of his busy work schedule to teach choir every Wednesday afternoon this year, and lead the students in the singing of God’s praises.

Mary Terpstra is our Career Counselor; she coordinates our Career Opportunity Program.

Jan Huisenga will again be our school secretary for three days a week. Mary Warner and Debbie Poortinga will not be returning to Heritage this year. We would like to thank our secretaries for their dedication to Heritage and for the countless hours they have spent working in the office on a weekly basis and over the course of the summer. The staff and students will miss them.

We would like to welcome Bonnie Kooiker to Heritage; she will be our volunteer bookkeeper for two mornings a week.

Although the work of our volunteers often goes unnoticed, we know that the school could not operate smoothly without them.

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” I Corinthians 15:58.
This years new board officers:

  • President – Earl Kamps
  • Vice President – Andy Birkett
  • Secretary – Ken De Jong
  • Treasurer – Keith Bruinsma
  • Vice-Sec. Tres. – Phil Kooiker

We would like to thank our retiring board members, Bill De Jong, Ted Andringa, Pete Zandstra and Garry Eriks for their years of dedication and service to the board and Heritage.

In His Service,
The Board
