| As
we reflect on the completion of our first year of school and in
anticipation of our second school year, which began in August, we
have abundant reasons for thankfulness to our Heavenly Father. God
has blessed our school even in the midst of the trials that were
part of our first year of operation as a small high school. We have
been given a dedicated staff and administrator and many helpful
volunteers. Our students also demonstrated respect for the teachers
as well as an enthusiasm and interest in learning.
Now that our second year of operation has begun and the workload
for our teachers, and all involved has increased, we must again
go forward by faith. We trust that our Heavenly Father will continue
to bless the cause of sound Reformed Education for our future generations.
We are happy to report that our administrator, Mr. Ralph Medema,
continues to receive favorable reports from his doctors. Mr. Medema
has reached the six-month milestone since his transplant and his
leukemia continues to be in remission. We are thankful to God for
His healing mercies.
Mrs. Sue Looyenga expanded her education this summer by taking
two classes at Dordt College. One class dealt with developing thematic
units by incorporating the content of the courses under themes that
emphasized our worldview and helping students view the content and
skills they need at a given level. Mrs. Looyenga’s second class
centered on writing curriculum and placing our worldview first in
planning and writing it. She is working on her Master’s and hopes
to finish in 2004, D.V.
Mr. Dan Van Uffelen worked this summer on developing curriculum
for American Literature and Mechanical Drawing Courses. He also
revised curriculum for World Geography and English I. Dan and his
wife Kate are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child
due in early November. We are thankful to God for providing us with
a new teacher, Mr. Bob Vermeer. He comes to us from Covenant Christian
High School, where he taught for 17 years. He is teaching math,
physics, and computer courses. Bob and his wife Mary Lou have six
children Rebecca is married to Rev. David Overway. Their sons David,
22, and Michael, 18, are attending Purdue-Calumet College. Mary
Jo is 20 years old and working part time as a secretary at our grade
school. Lori, 14, is a freshman at Heritage. Their youngest, Jonathan,
is 10 years old and in the fifth grade. They now reside in Lansing
and are members of Peace PRC. We pray that their work here will
be blessed of the Lord and that they will enjoy the communion of
the saints in our midst.

we
have moved our classrooms to another wing of Calvary Reformed Church.
The increase in the number of students, 11 freshmen and 1 new junior
giving us a total of 27 students, made this move necessary. We can
see that we will soon need a facility with both larger and additional
classrooms. The next two classes to come out of the grade school
are both large, and the number of students at Heritage will quickly
increase. The need for our own school building is upon us. At the
last Association meeting, we established a building fund, with a
goal of $1,650,000 by the fall of 2004. Association Members should
have received new building fund envelopes in the mail. We put this
need before you and pray that God will bless us with the finances
necessary to provide a suitable facility. With much work ahead of
us, we go forward trusting in our Heavenly Father to provide for
us. We ask that you pray for the board and all those working toward
this goal. The “Web Site Committee” of Heritage has developed a
new web site. The address is www.heritagechs.org. Information regarding
our faculty, curriculum, and school events can be found here. The
Headliner, The Defender, board newsletters, and other news concerning
Heritage Christian High School will be updated from time to time.
We hope this new web site will help keep all involved in the school’s
functions as we seek to promote excellent, Protestant Reformed Christian
education for our high school aged students.
We would like to thank the retiring members of the board: Henry
Bleyenburg, Gys Van Baren and Todd Terpstra. Your dedication to
Heritage is greatly appreciated.
