| The
Sounds of Silence
By Katie Van Baren
In English
IV, I am learning that speaking and listening go hand in hand. I
participated in an exercise that showed just how many background
noises compete for my attention in class, while I am supposed to
be listening to the teacher. I had to sit in silence and listen
to all the noises for two minutes.
As I
sat quietly for those two minutes, I noticed many things that I
had not noticed before. I heard the clock ticking. I noticed the
other teachers in the rooms next door; it seemed almost as if I
were in the room with them while they were teaching. I heard things
that I had never noticed, including the traffic on the street outside
of school and the train that passed just down the road. I could
hear the breathing of the people next to me, and when they moved
the slightest bit, I could hear their clothes rustling.
I realized
after this exercise that I have to really concentrate on the subject
at hand when I am in class, because there are many distractions.
I have to want to block out the sounds around me, and that in itself
is a true triumph.
“Wherefore,
my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, and slow to
speak, slow to wrath.” James 1:19

From
the Counselors: The ACT assessment is used as an
entrance exam to most colleges. It is recommended that students
who are thinking about going to college take this test in
the spring of their junior year of high school. Testing
in the spring of your junior year gives you the most options
in terms of meeting college admission and scholarship deadlines
and having time to take the test again if you choose. The
schedule for the ACT assessment and the deadlines for registration
is as follows:
Test
Date |
Registration
Deadline |
April
3, 2004 |
February
27, 2004 |
June
12, 2004 |
May

You can sign up to take the test at various locations. The
test is administered at Illiana Christian High School on
June 12 and will probably be the most convenient for most
students. Visit the ACT website at www.act.org for more
information or to register for the ACT. Our high school
code is 143946. You will need this to register.
