Roe vs. Wade
By
Bonnie Boer
“If the President appoints just one more Supreme
Court justice opposed to the right to choose, Roe and the right
to choose will become history. We must act together to ensure
that future generations of women have the right to control their
lives…” (Roe vs. Wade.com) Thirty years have passed since the
court case of Roe vs. Wade. What was declared legal on January
22, 1973 seemed a big, positive step for some Americans, but for
the Christian it was a giant leap into sin and corruption in our
nation.
Today, ever since the Roe vs. Wade case in 1973
made abortion legal nationwide, 40 million babies have been killed.
That’s over 1.3 million babies each year, 13,753 each day, and
one baby every 23 seconds. To the Christian, these murder statistics
are outrageous! It is unimaginable that a woman could ever desire
to kill her own flesh and blood, her little child, her miracle
from above. Yet, abortion doesn’t seem even to phase the world.
The people of the world believe that they have freedom and the
liberty to make decisions for themselves. It’s their bodies, their
choices, their lives.
The psalmist says that children are the heritage
of the Lord, and that the fruit of the womb is His reward. We
are blessed with a quiver full of them. If we know that children
are a gift from Almighty God, how can we rebel against the Lord?
We mustn’t. We must be thankful to our Father above, who bestows
these precious jewels on us, to train as children of the light.
We must pray for our government that they stop the murder of infants.
Most of all, we must praise the Lord for making us His adopted
sons and daughters, giving us not only life on this earth, but
also eternal life in glory with Him.

War?
By Rachel Warner
Tuesday night, January
28, 2003, many Americans watched on television or listened on
the radio to President Bush’s State of the Union Address. One
of the main points that Bush focused on was the issue of going
to war with Iraq.
Twelve years ago, Saddam
Hussein agreed to disarm all of his weapons of mass destruction,
including his chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons. He did
not keep his promise. America has proof of these weapons, including
weapon materials, documents, and labs for making them. Saddam
Hussein was given his final chance three months ago by the United
Nations Security Council to fully disarm, but he has only shown
a hatred for the United Nations. Saddam protects terrorists, including
al-Qaida members, and gives them information and assistance. If
Saddam Hussein does not disarm, America will react and most likely
go to war.
This war will affect
each of us, some in different ways than others. We could see loved
ones deployed and going off to war. Their lives could be lost
fighting for this country. But we must say with the psalmist in
Psalm 121: “I lift up mine eyes to the mountains, I look to Jehovah
for aid, my help is in the Lord God Almighty, the earth and heavens
He made.”
Defenders
of the Faith
By Gina Verburg
Defending the faith
is something that we should be well practiced in today. In our
non-Christian religions and cults class (known to all of us as
“cults”), we are learning to do so. The overall question we are
asking ourselves in this class is: “Why should we study the world’s
religions?” We are seeing that people answer this question in
many different ways.
There are, of course,
many religions with many different beliefs. We have looked at
those who believe in common grace, general revelation, inclusivism,
and pluralism. We are also defining words such as “cult” and “sect”
so that we will be better able to distinguish between them and
other groups.
|
Throughout this class we are discovering that as non-Christian
religions spread and become more popular, so should our
knowledge of the Bible and our ability to defend the faith.
We must not be ashamed of the gospel. We must be able
to quote Bible texts. We call ourselves the “Heritage
Defenders” in our sporting events, but we must also call
ourselves “heritage defenders” with regard to our faith.
World History
By Melinda De Jong
Our
second semester has begun. Many new classes have come with this
semester, and one of these courses is ancient/medieval world history.
We started this course by listing Scripture passages that teach
that all of history was and is in God’s hand. We saw in Acts 15:18
that God knows and controls all of history’s events. We noticed
in Romans 11:36 that history is for the glory of God and that
God’s eternal plan glorifies Himself.
Next, we looked at
the pre-Flood and post- Flood civilizations. While studying the
pre-flood civilization, we looked up Genesis 4:16-22 and found
that the civilization before the flood was characterized by long
life, one language, and the building of the first city, Enoch.
In Genesis 6:5-7 we found out that the people were extremely wicked.
We know that God sent
the Flood to destroy the wicked. There were four major early civilizations.
They were all established along rivers and had many things in
common, such as specialized labor, advanced technology, and government
systems.
This past week, we
have been studying the history of the Sumerians. We learned that
Abraham probably lived in Ur while it was having its “Golden Age.”
During the Golden Age of Ur, the city was flourishing, technology
was advanced, and approximately 200,000 people lived in the city.
We have seen some pretty
amazing things while studying this subject. We began the class
in the perfect way, with the Word of God. We will continue to
study history, and the Word of God will not be forgotten.
