Consumer Economics
By Emily De Jong
The
upcoming Christmas break is not the only break that we will be
having from regular school. We will also be having a two-week
interim course after Christmas break.
We await
this with eagerness, as we will have many guest speakers and activities.
The chief speaker will be Mr. Eric Ophoff. Our four teachers will
be presenting various topics. We will also have three speakers coming
from Michigan: Mr. Peter Vander Schaaf, Mr. Jim Decker, and Mr.
Edward Ophoff. Besides these speakers we will have two area ministers
speak to us: Rev. Houck, the pastor of Peace PRC and Rev. Haak,
the pastor of Bethel PRC.
The topic
this year is Consumer Economics. We will learn how to handle our
money, balance a checkbook, and other such things. A few of the
sub-topics include government, market systems, insurance, banking,
cars, housing, law, environmentalism, and taxes.
But this
is not all. During the course, we will be going on a field trip
to the Mercantile Exchange. We will also have choir every day. We
will be presenting a special program, to which you are invited,
on Friday, January 17 at 8:00 p.m. In addition, our lunch hour will
be longer than the usual 25 minutes, and we may have time to play
some intramural games, such as basketball, soccer, or mini-ping
pong.
Interim
provides a great chance for all of us to learn something new. I
think that I can say that the whole student body here at Heritage
Christian High School is looking forward to it. |
ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. Exams. The exam schedule can be
found in this issue of The Headliner. During exam days,
all students are expected to be in attendance. If not
taking an exam, students will be in study hall.
2.
Christmas Break begins on December 23. School
resumes on January 6.
3. Career Counselor Contacts: This year the
juniors at Heritage Christian will participate in the career
opportunity program. The purpose of this program is to match
a student’s career interest with an individual presently holding
that specific job. As career counselor, Mrs. Mary Terpstra
is looking for individuals willing to share information about
their careers, and, if possible, give a real on-the-job exposure.
If you, a family member, or a relative would be willing to
participate in Heritage’s career program, please contact Mrs.
Terpstra at 219-322-8416, or leave a message at the Heritage
school office. We are attempting to compile a wide variety
of occupations. Your willingness to help is appreciated.

Excursion

Can you
name the most famous work of George Frederic Handel? This probably
isn’t the most difficult question in the world. If you didn’t know
the answer, it is The Messiah. This specific piece of music happened
to be one of Handel’s favorites.
In England,
during a low point in Handel’s composing history, a friend, named
Charles Jennens, suggested that he write an oratorio based on a
compilation of Scripture passages that he had arranged in verse
form. Handel remained in England from August 22 through September
14. In that twenty-four day period, he wrote the whole work! About
five months later, the oratorio was played for the first time in
Dublin, Ireland.
The Messiah
presents the birth, death, and resurrection of our Lord. Handel
said that writing it was an inspiration. He wrote, “I did think
I did see all Heaven before me and the great God himself.”
On Saturday,
December 14, a group of interested students, teachers, and a few
others are taking a trip downtown to see the performance of The
Messiah in its entirety at Orchestra Hall/Symphony Center. To top
the evening off, we plan to dine at Connie’s Pizza. We are excited
and are looking forward to this great experience.

The International Feast
By Josh Dotson
Last Friday, students
at Heritage Christian High School ate food from many countries
of the world. In world geography class, the freshman and sophomore
classes selected recipes from different countries.
We ate foods like
pineapple pizza from Hawaii, kachoomber from Pakistan, Japanese
chicken, German sauerbraten, and many other interesting dishes.
The food was delicious.
Jacob Wiersma raved that the food was very good. Emily De Jong
announced, “There were some very interesting foods.” After the
International Feast, we were very full.
This is the second
year Mr. Van Uffelen’s class prepared the feast. I think this
meal is interesting and entertaining. I think all the students
enjoyed it. I only hope the next feast is as good as this year’s.
