Takraw
By Grace De Jong

The inside kick…the outside kick…the front kick…the thigh kick…the clipper shot…the loop shot…the bicycle kick…Now, are we playing soccer or basketball? Neither! It’s takraw!

This is a game that has been played since the early fourth century. Mr. Medema has just started teaching takraw to us this week for physical education.

Takraw is pretty easy to learn. We have only begun to learn the basics of the sport, which involves kicking a plastic ball around in a circle of about four or five players and individually juggling the ball with our legs.

Juggling the buka ball is more difficult than you might think! It takes a lot of energy. If you don’t control it, the buka ball will go flying out of control! It’s even harder when you have to pass the ball, because if you kick it too hard or too short, your other teammates won’t be able to retrieve it.

The best thing about the sport, though, is the many laughs you get from seeing your classmates kicking their legs up and flailing their arms as they try to get in position to kick the buka ball! I think we’ve all enjoyed this sport and maybe someday we’ll be naturals.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Thanksgiving Break will begin on November 27 with a half day and continue through Friday, November 29.

2. Attention Juniors: In December, Mrs. Mary Terpstra will be interviewing juniors about their interests concerning future careers. You will be notified with the day and time of your appointment. Mrs. Terpstra is looking forward to getting to know each of you, and she hopes to be of help as you seek God’s will for your years following high school.

3. Career Counselor Contacts: This year the juniors at Heritage Christian will participate in the career opportunity program. The purpose of this program is to match a student’s career interest with an individual presently holding that specific job. As career counselor, Mrs. Mary Terpstra is looking for individuals willing to share information about their careers, and, if possible, give a real on-the-job exposure. If you, a family member, or a relative would be willing to participate in Heritage’s career program, please contact Mrs. Terpstra at 219-322-8416, or leave a message at the Heritage school office. We are attempting to compile a wide variety of occupations. Your willingness to help is appreciated.

Salvete, 6th Graders!
By Bonnie Boer

Roman decorations, teens in togas, and loads of Latin information await the 6th grade students of the Protestant Reformed Grade School. Mrs. Stacey Bruinsma’s ancient history class has learned some information on ancient Roman culture and is about to learn a little more.

By December 13, the Latin students of Heritage will have prepared a presentation. In our “Great Hall,” or assembly room, there will be many tables set up by different students on various topics. Some topics have to do with the roles of men and women in Rome. Others will describe the Romans and the clothes they wore, the way they held their wedding ceremonies, their different forms of entertainment, and some medical procedures that they practiced.

The Latin I and II students are busy preparing for this and are quite excited to get the chance to share what they have learned. We hope this will be a memorable experience for the 6th grade class.

Solutions for Pregnant Women
By Melinda De Jong

In our physics class, we have discovered some new ways for pregnant women to reduce their back pains.

One way for these women to do this is to wear skis. This would help women’s back problems because their center of gravity would still be above their base. The center of gravity makes a difference, because when it is above the base, a person becomes more stable.

Another way to reduce these pregnancy pains would be for a pregnant woman to

carry a large mass on her back, for example, holding a stick over her shoulders with a bag full of heavy objects on the end of it. This would cause her center of gravity to be above the base, because of the large mass in the bag.

Center of mass makes all the difference. If a pregnant woman’s center of mass is in front of her, she will fall over. To avoid falling over, a pregnant woman bends backwards and creates back problems. However, these new discoveries in physics should help the poor pregnant women of the day!

Thesis Statement
By Alyssa Zandstra

What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is a sentence that states the focus of a composition. It shows a special feature of the subject, expresses a specific feeling, or takes a stand. In our English III class, we have been studying ways to write correctly, creatively, and meaningfully.

We have learned about the four basic types of paragraphs: expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. We have taken a close look at each of these paragraphs and are preparing to write an essay using these four styles.

We have just started to learn about the expository essay. In an expository essay, a writer must inform his audience about a meaningful or interesting subject without arguing or giving personal opinions, just giving the straight facts.

Learning to write different types of paragraphs is a great way to give variety to your writing and keep your readers interested in the subject.
