Mechanical Drawing Class
By Tim Vander Meulen

Having already taken a similar class at Illiana Christian High School, it is interesting for me to see mechanical drawing in a slightly different perspective here at Heritage Christian High School.

At Illiana, I took two semesters of Auto CAD, a computer program which allows the user to make blueprints and parts plans. The class here at Heritage is similar, but instead of using the computer, we use paper, pencils, drawing boards, and all that good stuff.

The class at Heritage will require more work, and I am sure that more than just a few erasers will get demolished. The class is most assuredly a favorite among the older students and long awaited by the younger students.

Mr. Van Uffelen brings a fun atmosphere into the class. It is usually relaxed. In my opinion, it is the best class of the whole day, because it is interesting and also the last class of the day.

In the first week of the course we learned how to sketch quick drawings. We went on to learn about the proper use and care of drafting equipment. We are now learning geometric construction and the basics of drawing perfect shapes, such as octagons, hexagons, pentagons, and five-point stars, with our drafting equipment. Shapes will soon move into objects, such as parts found in vehicles and other machines. At the end of the year, Mr. Van Uffelen will require all of the mechanical drawing students to have completed a house plan.

Mechanical drawing should be interesting to all students. I think everyone will enjoy this class.

Bang!
By Melissa De Jong

In physics class, Mr. Vermeer showed the juniors and sophomores how to stop an egg by applying an impulse. He showed us this by taking us outside in the cold! He told Katie Van Baren and Grace De Jong to hold up a sheet. Then each of us had the chance to throw an egg at the sheet. Most of the eggs hit the sheet without cracking!

When Josh Dotson threw an egg, it skimmed right over the top of the sheet and smashed right into the sand volleyball court. Amazingly, it didn’t break!

You might be wondering why the egg didn’t break when it hit the sheet. It’s because impulse is force multiplied by time. By increasing the time, the force decreased so that the egg didn’t break.

Mr. Vermeer explained to us that if you threw an egg at a cement wall there would be a much different result. Throwing an egg at a hard surface compared to throwing an egg at a soft surface are two very different things because the decrease in time increases the force. There’s also a much bigger mess if you throw the egg at a cement wall!

The D.C. Sniper
By Meghan Looyenga

We still live in the wake of September 11. We have been threatened and scared by many events in the past year. The war on Iraq is imminent, but there is also a war being fought here at home.

It appears that it is one person putting the whole nation on edge. In the past few weeks, we have been glued to the news about the D.C. Sniper. He has killed at least 10 people. The sniper obviously has some military or arms training and has used it to be very accurate and sharp when choosing his victims.

When the police inform people in one area that they are safe from the sharpshooter, he heads directly there and lets the people know that they aren’t safe anywhere. He has killed a child, a mother, a senior citizen, and others that are caught unaware.

As the news unfolds, so do the interesting statistics. Pizza delivery sales have risen by almost half, and store sales are down by 15 percent. Because they don’t want to find themselves in the D.C. Sniper’s line of fire, nobody wants to leave the house.

Mr. Van Uffelen’s take on the tragic events is, “I am outraged and I hope we get him!”

Deism in American Literature
By Jacob Wiersma

What comes to your mind when you think about the founding fathers of our nation? I used to think that they were devout Christian men. But many of them were not. In fact, if the founding fathers had been devout Christians, this nation’s rebellious beginning would never have taken place. They were part of what is known as the Age of Reason.

Many of the founding fathers and major literary figures of the American Revolutionary Age were deists and thus referred to God in their writings as a First Cause. Deists rejected Christian theism. They believed that man did not fall into sin, thus they believed that they didn’t need Christ to save them from their sins. They did not believe that Christ is God. They believed that God created the universe in a closed system (God created the world and just sits back and watches what happens without interacting with the world anymore). Deists didn’t follow tradition and thought that organized religion was a bad thing.

We reject deism, knowing that man is fallen and that we need Christ. We believe that God created the world and governs it providentially.
