God’s
Providential Care
Grace De Jong
The
first year of Heritage Christian High School is coming to a close.
As we look back, we see the great providence of God throughout
this year. We see His love and His care for His people. After
twenty long years of waiting, the doors were opened and students
were sent to this school.
This
year has had its series of ups and downs just like every other
school. But we have something different from many other schools
as well. We have Christ as our focus, and the teachers have applied
His truth to every area of our studies.
In
our Bible and history classes we learned about God’s preservation
of His Church though the ages. In biology we continually fought
against the theory of evolution and substituted in its place the
truth of God’s six-day creation. In our math classes we saw how
God gave order to everything. In English, as we pondered certain
works of literature, we compared the worldview of several writers
to our own Christian worldview. In computer applications we discussed
how computers can be used for the glory of God and how they can
be used for sin.
Everyday
we learn more and more about Christ and how He is working in our
lives. We have not only studied to learn about how we are to live
and manage in this world, but also how to apply Christ to every
area of our lives.
We
were the first classes to receive this special instruction, but
we by God’s grace will not be the last. God will preserve His
truth and He has and will continue to preserve His covenant for
years to come.

Year’s Juniors: The PSAT test will be administered at
Heritage on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, during the school day.
Deadline for registration is June 15. Please call Mary Terpstra
by May 25 if interested in taking the test. The PSAT is a two-hour
test with three sections: math, verbal, and English grammar. The
cost for the test is $10.00. Two important reasons for taking
the PSAT are: 1.) preparation for the SAT test. 2.) attempting
to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Award. For more
information go to www.collegeboard.com.
Next Year’s Sophomores: The PLAN test will be
given to all sophomores on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, during the
school day. The test will be approximately 65 minutes long and
will test English, math, reading, and science reasoning. The PLAN
test helps assess status of academic preparation for higher education,
and relates personal characteristics to education and career options.
For more information go to www. act.org/plan.
Speech Skills
Rachel Warner
“You
are all going to have to make an informative speech for English
class, and it must last 3-5 minutes.” Mr. Van Uffelen broke the
news to us last week. This caused many, if not all of the freshmen
class, to look up in fright. Standing up in front of the class
and making a five-minute speech? It all sounded beyond our capabilities.
Mr.
Van Uffelen gave us a topic for our speeches: church history.
We could pick any event in all of church history and prepare a
speech. After learning about how to write and prepare a speech,
however, it doesn’t sound too bad – especially since we get to
incorporate our computer applications skills into this project
by using PowerPoint to enhance our speeches. Using PowerPoint,
we will put our main points onto different slides, and when we
get up to them in our speeches, we will click the mouse button
to project the next point and PowerPoint slide onto the screen.
We
can’t wait to hear each other’s speeches and find out how each
of us will perform in front of the teacher and our classmates.

Dissecting
Alyssa Zandstra
Over the past
few weeks we have been studying about the animal kingdom in biology.
We began looking at invertebrates and continued by looking at vertebrates.
We studied the phylum of annelids, or segmented worms. As a partner-project
we have had to dissect a worm and identify its various parts, looking
at the structure and function of the body parts. We are currently
dissecting frogs!
Michigan
Melinda De Jong
On May 9, 2002,
Heritage Christian High School was privileged to be able to attend
Covenant Christian High School’s Career Day. We traveled up to Michigan
on Thursday and attended the worship service at First Protestant
Reformed Church of Holland for the Ascension Day service.
After church
our school group split up. Some went with Mr. Medema and Mr. Van
Uffelen and others went with Mrs. Looyenga. Those who went with
Mr. Medema went to Covenant, where our hosts were waiting to pick
us up. Then we were on our own with the families who took us in.
On Friday, we
went into a school that had a lot of students. When we walked in,
we moved into something completely different from our school. There
were over a hundred students. Bells were ringing and the halls were
echoing with the sound of talking students. Our day had only just
begun!
First, we went
to a class in which devotions were held. After devotions, we were
dismissed to the gym where the speech on how to prepare for our
careers was held. Next, we went to the appointed rooms where we
could hear speeches on our selected topics. Then, we had a fifteen-minute
break and it was off to another job speech. When all the classes
were finished, we met in the gym, where we heard our final speech
on how to dress, act, and answer questions at an interview. After
lunch, it was back to Illinois.
We would all
agree that the trip to Covenant was fun, filled with useful information,
and a time of Christian fellowship.
