A New
Teacher!
Heritage Christian High
School is thrilled to announce that the 2002-2003 school year will
arrive with the blessing of a new teacher, Mr. Bob Vermeer, D.V.
The present faculty
anticipates working with a fourth teacher, and the students are
eager to study under a brand new instructor.
Mr. Vermeer presently
teaches at Covenant Christian High School in Walker, Michigan, where
he has been an educator for 17 years! Before his Covenant days,
he spent four years teaching at the Protestant Reformed School in
Lynden, Washington.
Mr. Vermeer grew up
in Iowa with his wife, Mary Lou. He graduated from Calvin College
in Grand Rapids, Michigan with a major in mathematics and a minor
in economics, although his passion is physics. Mr. Vermeer is eager
to teach math again!
Most of Mr. and Mrs.
Vermeer’s family of six children will be making the move with them.
Their oldest daughter, Rebecca (24), is married to seminarian David
Overway. They have one child and have moved their parents into grandparent
status. David (22) plans to enroll as a senior at Purdue University
Calumet. Their third child, Mary Jo (20), does secretarial work
in a sales firm. Michael (18) will graduate from Covenant this year.
He plans to join his brother at Purdue to study in the field of
engineering. Lori (14) plans to join our school as a freshman next
year! Finally, the youngest of the bunch, Jonathan (10), will be
joining the 5th grade class at the grade school.
We warmly welcome Mr.
Vermeer and his family into our fellowship. Mr. Vermeer expresses
that he is anxiously looking forward to meeting everyone at the
open house on May 3!

The New
Family
Melinda De Jong
We sat down to
eat in the gym this past Thursday and were about to start when
the gym doors opened. In walked a man and part of his family,
people who have been talked about so much of late.
“Students!” Mr.
Van Uffelen said, “This is Mr. Vermeer and his family.” After
the announcement, we prayed together and had lunch. We invited
Lori, Mr. Vermeer’s daughter to sit with us at our freshman table.
Lori will be a freshman in our school next year.
On Friday, Lori
was in attendance with the freshman class all day long. She took
Western Civilization notes, an English test, and an Algebra quiz.
She did all the things that she would be doing in a normal freshman
school day.
We welcome the
teacher, student, and family with a grateful heart. We thank God
that we have been blessed with a new teacher who fulfills all
the teaching needs that were required for the next year and years
to come.
Algebra
II
Meghan Looyenga
What is the smallest class you have been in?
I’ll bet there aren’t many smaller than the Algebra
II class that Emily and I are in. There are only two of us, and
that makes for a very interesting learning experience.
We often get to work together and help one another
when we don’t know the answer; the only problem is finding an
answer when neither of us knows the answer!
When asked what she thought about the little class,
Emily said, “Algebra II is the best class in the school!” I think
I agree. We really enjoy this unique experience.

World
History
Jacob Wiersma
In World History class, we have studied all the different
peoples that have lived in and ruled the Fertile Crescent. These
peoples included the Amorites, Chaldeans, Hittites, Egyptians,
and Israelites.
It was interesting to find out what these civilizations
were like: what kinds of weapons they used, what languages they
spoke, and what their forms of writing were like. The Bible mentions
all of these people at some point or another, which makes this
information good to know. It gives us a better understanding of
Biblical times.
We also studied the Greeks. We learned about their
culture, religion, democracy, and conquests. We have learned how
the world was being prepared for Christ’s birth, even at a time
when Alexander the Great was conquering the known world.
Right now, we are learning about how the world was
being prepared for the coming of Christ, “in the fullness of time,”
when the Romans took over even more of the known world than that
of the Greeks. We are learning about Roman culture, the Roman
republic and empire, and how the Romans conquered as much of the
world as they did. We are also learning about the difference between
the Pax Romana, the Roman peace, and the far more glorious
peace that Christ brings to His people.
