Sledding

By Melinda De Jong

“Here we go-o-o-o-o!!!” shouts a student from Heritage Christian High School.

“Watch out!” yells another.

For three days we had the privilege of sledding on the hill by our school. We used many different “sleds” on our way down the hill, from actual sleds to garbage bags! Mr. Medema came up with the idea of using garbage bags, and it became a fun way for many of us to go sledding.

As we were sledding, suddenly I heard Emily De Jong scream. She had soared over a man-made jump and she was about three feet in the air! About five minutes later, Bonnie Boer went over the same jump.

We had a blast while it lasted, enjoying the snow that God had sent to us. All of the students had fun. When we came back inside, Mrs. Looyenga had hot chocolate and cookies waiting for us.

French Toast

Melissa De Jong

On Thursday, March 7, 2002, the sophomore class made French toast in chemistry class. You might be wondering, “What does French toast have to do with Chemistry?” Well, you’re about to find out!

Each of us had a partner. I was stuck with my sister Emily. Emily and I first put in one egg, which we beat slightly. Then we mixed 1/3 cup of milk with the egg. We mixed a half-teaspoon of salt and a tablespoon of sugar with the egg. Then I dipped the French toast bread into the ingredients. Emily did the frying. (Our French toast was better than Meghan and Josh Dotson’s. They didn’t mix theirs good enough and had eggs sticking to the French toast when they cooked it)

You’re probably dying to find out what French toast has to do with chemistry, right? When you cook French toast, a chemical reaction occurs. The French toast is being cooked and you cannot uncook it! Not only that, but the experiment taught us about Stoichiometry, the study of the quantitative (measurable) relationships that exist in chemical formulas and chemical reactions.

Night

Michelle Zandstra

In English class, we just finished reading the book Night, written by Eliezer Wiesel. The author is an actual survivor of the Holocaust. He describes his life in the concentration camps and his slim chances of escaping death.

The book points out the terrible things that the cruel Nazis did to the innocent Jews, killing them, starving them, overworking them, laughing at them, and tearing their families apart.

Elie describes how he lost his faith during the Holocaust. He said that his god was no longer there, no longer caring, merciful, and loving. He struggled with his faith, stating, “I prayed to the God in whom I no longer believed.”

We know that this is wrong. We must never lose our trust and faith in God, even during hard times. Many of the Jews did not believe in Christ, which is why they struggled with their faith during the Holocaust.

We know that Christ did come and we have comfort in that. We also know that whatever trials God sends to us are for our good. As a Christian, it would have been a hard time to go through what the Jews went through, but eventually the time will come when we will have to suffer the worst persecution. Christ will give us the strength to stand this persecution and all of our trials in this life.

Sword & Shield Progress

By Rachel Warner

Near the end of the day, you can hear a lot of laughs and giggles coming from different rooms down the hall, as we look through pictures and recall many memories of this past school year.

We are sorting our many pictures, taken by teachers, secretaries, and students. We are also working on our page layouts, finding the perfect caption for the pictures. The ads staff has already assigned us each a list of people to call and ask to be ad sponsors and patrons.

We are hoping to have our yearbook published near the beginning of May, after which it will be distributed. We are also planning a Sword and Shield party in May to celebrate our hard work.
