Safe in the
Shadow of the Lord

By Gina Verburg

We walked down the aisle in threes and stood there, singing from our hearts, “Safe in the shadow of the Lord, beneath His hand and power, I trust in Him, I trust in Him, my fortress and my tower.”

After we finished this song, we sang other songs from different periods of history. The first two were our “less serious” ones, the Alphabet song and Cold and Fugue Season. We had the audience chuckling when, at the end of the Cold and Fugue Season, we all took out Kleenex and “A-chooed” into them rather loudly.

When we sang religious songs, we noticed many people in the audience crying. I am very glad that we had this program because it shows what we are doing at Heritage Christian High School. It also showed to us that people really care about us very much.

After the program, we went downstairs and were pleasantly surprised to find Mrs. Huizinga and her two daughters, Courtney and Christina, handing out chocolate roses to the girls and “Stars and Stripes” chocolate balls to the boys. That made us feel appreciated!

Thank you to everyone who came. I hope you enjoyed listening to our program as much as we enjoyed singing for you.

The War
By Michelle Zandstra

“Did you know that every single person is a soldier?” asked Rev. R. Hanko. “Well, everyone is! Everybody is a soldier in this holy war. In everything you do, you either side with God or with the Devil. Does anyone know when this war began?”

It was January 22, and Rev. Hanko was speaking to us about the antithesis. He went on to describe the holy war that we are in. This war started in Paradise when Adam was convinced to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. He disobeyed God’s law and plunged us into sin.

Now we must fight. We must fight against our three-fold enemy: Satan, the world, and our own sinful nature (flesh). We fight by putting on the whole armor of God.

Rev. Hanko pointed out that we often lose battles in this war. We lose when we don’t pay attention in church and when we refuse to do our homework. We lose whenever we refuse to obey God’s Word. Whenever we do something, we must ask ourselves, ‘Am I siding with God or Satan?’

Revelation speaks of this war. The book is divided into two parts: the first eleven chapters speak of our battle with the world. The second eleven chapters deal with Christ’s battle with Satan. Finally, at the end of chapter 22, we find that Christ has the victory, even if at times it feels as if we are losing. We must find our comfort in Romans 8:37: “…we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.”

Computer Applications
By Josh Poortinga

For those of you that have not yet heard that we just started Computer Applications class on Monday, January 28, I will clue you in. We will be learning about databases, spreadsheets, and word processors.

As young people, Computer Applications class will keep us up to date on many of the computer programs that are frequently used in the business world today.

When we have finished this course, you should be able to ask us any question about the computer, and we should be able to help you out.

Remember, if you ever need a tour of the computer lab, Mr. Van Uffelen will be more than happy to give you one.

Discipleship
By Melinda De Jong

On Friday, January 18, 2002, and Monday, January 21, 2002, Reverend Carl Haak came to Heritage Christian High School and taught us what is means to be a true disciple. To be true disciples, we must deny ourselves, carry our crosses, follow, and obey Christ.

During our Friday classes we learned about the characteristics of being a disciple. We looked up many Bible passages that talked about true discipleship. As disciples, we must fight against living for this world and ourselves and fight for dedicating our lives to serve Jehovah. Christ was the only man who could ever live perfectly, and it is Christ who must be our example.

On Monday we had quite a few discussions about discipleship. One question that we faced was how to handle a sinning friend. We learned that if our friend won’t listen to us, we must bring another friend and go the way of Matthew 18. We also discussed whether a disciple should be courting or dating. This interesting debate took up at least an hour.

Our discipleship classes were very enjoyable. We left with several fresh thoughts and ideas.
